The Filipino Youth

In the 21st century, technology has been rising and there have been new trends made. The question is that, what is the difference of the Filipino Youth now and then? According to the people that had been interviewed and some research that had been done is that they say the Filipino Youth then were smarter than the Filipino Youth now. It is because the Filipino Youth back then maximized in using learning materials like textbooks and encyclopedias in researching for information needed in school assignments and such. Unlike today, with the use of technology and what we call “the internet”, all the information needed was already posted online and is just a click away.

The Filipino Youth then had more time doing projects and assignments than the Filipino Youth now because there are factors from technology that hinders the youth’s intellectual growth like video games, social networking sites and other online activities.
The Filipino youth before did more outdoor activities with the traditional pinoy games like, piko, chinese garter, tumbang preso, sipa, etc. Most Filipino Youth now enjoy mostly on texting, surfing the net and are more on the couch-potato type, those who just sit down, watch television and eat all the time, which can lead to obesity. The youth before observed a healthy lifestyle because they usually enjoy having short walks, riding bicycles, dancing and exercising and were sometimes conscious on the quantity and quality of the food they eat.

Young male counterparts were inclined to aspire for acquisition of material things that they would like to be leaders in their future jobs like their fathers while the young females were found aspiring for professional satisfaction that they would like to learn and enjoy their jobs if they become permanent.

Some of the Filipino Youth now don’t listen to what their parents say and sometimes do the opposite when their parents tell them what not to do plus they talk back which is such a disrespectful act. According to some sources on the internet and from interviewing people from the 80s, obviously there are more women who got pregnant at an early age. This shows how some youths now are undisciplined compared to the youths before. Filipino youth now tend to imitate some characters from different foreign films thinking that it is “cool” to be violent and aggressive. Unlike Filipino youth then were respectful and God-fearing. Thus, Filipino youth then have good moral attitude than Filipino youth now.

Over the years that have passed, the tradition of courtship and marriage in some ways have been preserved. Due to the open mind of the Filipinos today, there had been modifications or “evolutions”, influenced by other cultures that give courtship a modern version. Modern Filipino Courtship revolves on the liberalism of the Filipino Youth. If couples are not allowed to mingle in public without a chaperon in the old days, it is already acceptable today. This, together with the advanced technology today which allows people to communicate easily, made courtship easier to the Filipino Youth. Meeting through a party or through a common friend is not only possible now, but has in fact become a very popular method of finding someone to court. During the time that the practice of traditional courtship is highly recognized among most Filipinos, one cannot just approach a lady and ask for her number or address. He must seek the help of a go-between or locally, usually someone close to the family of both parties, to ask the father of the girl if the man can visit the lady in their house and impresses the girl until she accepts the man’s request or love.

Therefore the Filipino youth then are way better than Filipino youth now. Fast paced environment, hi-tech gadgets and fancy lifestyles should not hinder us from being a better person every day. No matter where we go or fate brings us, always be grounded and keep all the good Filipino values that our parents have instilled in us.
